Kitsap Physical Therapy was founded in January 1979 by Mike and Barb Danford with a simple vision: to build a practice where patients could receive exceptional physical therapy delivered with clinical excellence, compassion, and integrity. From the very beginning, they believed that the best patient outcomes come from investing in people. They committed themselves, and every clinician who joined them, to lifelong learning, advanced professional development, and evidence-based care.

What began in a house converted to office space and shortly after moving into the North Kitsap Medical Center in Poulsbo soon earned the trust of physicians, patients, and the communities we serve. As the need for high-quality rehabilitation services grew throughout Kitsap County, we were repeatedly invited by local healthcare providers and community leaders to expand into additional locations. Each new clinic was established with the same purpose: to bring exceptional, relationship-centered care closer to the people who needed it.

Today, Kitsap Physical Therapy has evolved to be Washington’s longest-standing private physical and occupational therapy practice, serving our communities through multiple clinic locations and a wide range of specialty programs. While healthcare has changed dramatically over the past four decades, our commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and personalized patient care has remained constant.

As our practice grew, so did our understanding that our greatest strength has never been our buildings or equipment. It has always been our people. We have been incredibly fortunate that many talented therapists, assistants, administrative professionals, and support staff have chosen to build their careers with KPT. Their dedication, professionalism, and genuine care for one another have created a culture that patients experience every day.

Over time, that culture came to be defined by three simple yet deeply held Core Values: Kindness, Professionalism, and Teamwork. These values guide how we care for patients, how we support one another, how we partner with physicians and our communities, and how we make decisions as an organization. They are not simply words on a wall. They are principles that have shaped who we are.

One of the defining characteristics of Kitsap Physical Therapy is our commitment to therapist ownership. Rather than selling to a large corporate organization, we have intentionally developed a sustainable ownership model that allows talented physical and occupational therapists to become partners in the practice. Today, nearly 25 clinician owners share responsibility for leading our organization.

This model allows each generation of leaders to build upon the foundation established by those before them while helping determine our future priorities, professional education, mentoring programs, community involvement, charitable giving, and new clinical initiatives. By sharing ownership, we preserve the independence that allows us to make decisions based on what is best for our patients, our team members, and the communities we serve.

Our story has never been about any one individual. It has been written by hundreds of dedicated people who have faithfully cared for patients, supported one another, and invested in something larger than themselves. That shared commitment has enabled KPT to remain independent, locally owned, and deeply rooted in Kitsap County for nearly five decades.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to the same mission that inspired Mike and Barb in 1979: to be the premier provider of physical and occupational therapy services in our region by developing exceptional clinicians, serving our communities with kindness, professionalism, and teamwork, and building a practice that future generations will be proud to carry forward.
